Almost a year ago we started an experiment. The idea was simple: on Sundays our courts are often empty and many people just want to play some relaxed tennis. So Hanna and Marlon created the Social Sunday. Book in, come by, play, with changing partners and explicitly open to guests who want to get to know our club.
The experiment has become an institution. Since its start in September 2025 the Social Sunday has taken place practically every weekend, in our indoor hall during winter and outdoors in summer. Almost every session was fully booked. In total about 150 different players have joined at least once, many of them now come almost every Sunday and some got to know the club so well through Social Sunday that they are members today.
That something like this keeps going for a whole year is anything but a given. Hanna and Marlon organise every single session, handle registrations and logistics, keep the mood up and the pairings fair and give up their Sunday week after week without getting anything more out of it than everyone else. Thanks to the two of them the Social Sunday has become a fixture of our club life and we are quite proud of that. Thank you both!
In the hall and for guests we charge small fees to cover the court costs. Over the year this has added up to a surplus and nobody deserves it more than the Social Sunday community itself. So here is our invitation:
- What: Social Sunday birthday party with a relaxed doubles tournament
- When: Sunday, August 23rd 2026, 2 pm to around 6 pm, open play afterwards
- Where: courts 1 to 4
- Food and drinks: a buffet from 4 pm and free drinks from 5 pm, both while supplies last
- Who can join: everyone who has taken part in a Social Sunday at least once, members and guests alike
- Costs: none
- Registration: in the booking system
How the tournament works
- In every round of roughly 15 minutes you are randomly assigned a doubles partner and two opponents.
- You play one continuous tiebreak until time runs out and if the score is level a single deciding point settles it.
- After every round there is a completely new draw.
- You can join, pause or stop at any time or simply stay at the buffet.
- There is no pressure to perform, just tennis for the fun of it.
And yes, if you do the maths: the Social Sunday only turns one in September. We are celebrating now anyway. Birthday parties in proper summer weather are simply better.
